Toughened glass is so-called as it is strengthened with heat or chemicals, leaving the material less likely to break.
Toughened glass is five times stronger than standard glass (also known as annealed glass) — and, once installed, can play a large part in reducing the amounts of UV light and outdoor sound that penetrate the building.
Compared to annealed glass, the tempered variety is built to hold up against much heavier impacts but can still eventually shatter under enough pressure.
Fortunately, when this does happen, the glass will break into small blunt shards rather than large and dangerous shards that could injure employees, customers or passersby.
